PayGate / Documentation

How PayGate works

PayGate customizes your Shopify checkout with three kinds of rules. Every rule has conditions (when it applies) and actions (what it does).

Payment rules

Control which payment methods customers see.

  • Hide payment methods when the conditions are met, or only show them when the conditions are met (hidden at every other checkout).
  • Rename payment methods, for example "Bank Deposit" to "Bank transfer".
  • Re-order payment methods by moving chosen ones to the top.

Payment methods are matched by name: Equals to, Contains or Does not contain. Use the name from Settings › Payments.

Shipping rules

Control which shipping methods customers see.

  • Hide shipping methods, for example free shipping below a minimum.
  • Rename shipping methods, for example adding delivery times.
  • Re-order shipping methods by drag and drop.

Shipping methods are matched by name (equals, contains, does not contain) or by price (free, equals, at most, at least, between).

Checkout rules

Stop orders that break your rules, with a message telling the customer what to fix.

  • Block checkout whenever the conditions are met, for example a minimum order.
  • Require a field: phone, company, ZIP or apartment.
  • Block PO box addresses.
  • Check postcode format for selected countries.

Messages appear on the exact checkout field. Address checks run when the customer clicks Pay and skip local pickup orders.

Conditions

Combine conditions with AND (all must be true) inside a group, and OR between groups. With no conditions, a rule applies to every checkout.

Area Conditions
Cart Cart total, cart subtotal, number of items, cart weight, specific products, collections, product tags, gift card in cart, subscription in cart, discount applied
Customer Customer tags, logged in or guest, previous orders, B2B customer
Shipping Country, state or province, city, ZIP or postcode, selected shipping method, delivery type

Amounts are entered in your store's currency and converted at checkout.

Some conditions don't apply to every rule type: shipping rules can't use the selected shipping method or delivery type (the options are decided before the customer picks one), and checkout rules don't use collections.

Testing and safety

  • Test this rule shows what a sample checkout would get, and why.
  • A rule never hides every payment or shipping method.
  • If a checkout rule can't run, checkout isn't blocked.

Limits

  • 25 active payment rules and 25 active checkout rules per store (Shopify's limit).
  • Hiding only the express button of a wallet requires Shopify Plus.
  • Methods with logos can't be renamed; express wallets can't be reordered.
  • Payment rules don't apply in Point of Sale or inside Shop Pay's own checkout.
