Why PayGate

Shopify shows every customer the same checkout. Your store isn't one-size-fits-all.

Without PayGate

One checkout for everyone

  • Cash on Delivery shows up for orders you can't collect, so they come back unpaid
  • Wholesale buyers can't see the bank transfer option you offer them, or retail buyers can
  • Orders to PO boxes arrive that your courier won't deliver
  • Tiny orders that cost more to ship than they earn
  • Shipping names that don't tell customers when their order will arrive
With PayGate

The right checkout for each order

  • Cash on Delivery only where and when you can collect it
  • Bank transfer only for customers tagged as wholesale, at the top of the list
  • PO box addresses stopped with a clear message on the address field
  • A minimum order value, shown in the cart and at checkout
  • Clearer delivery names, such as “Express · 1–3 days”

How it works

From install to your first rule in minutes

Every rule is the same three things: when it applies, what it does, and a switch to turn it on.

  1. Pick a template

Start from one of 46 ready-made rules, such as “Hide COD outside your country”. Your store's country is filled in for you.

  2. Set the conditions

Choose when the rule applies: cart value, products, customer tags, shipping country and more. Combine them with AND and OR.

  3. Test it, switch it on

Try the rule on a sample checkout, then set it to Active. New checkouts follow it within seconds.

What you can do

Three kinds of rules. Every step of checkout.

Show each customer the right ways to pay

Match payment methods by name (equals, contains or doesn't contain), then choose what happens when your conditions are met.

  • Hide methods, such as Cash on Delivery outside your country
  • Only show methods to some customers, such as bank transfer for B2B
  • Rename methods, such as “Bank Deposit” to “Bank transfer”
  • Reorder methods to put your preferred one first

20 conditions

Target exactly the checkouts you mean

Combine conditions with AND inside a group and OR between groups. Amounts are set in your store's currency and converted at checkout.

Who it's for

Made for the way you actually sell

Cash on Delivery stores

Offer COD where it works, and protect yourself from unpaid returns where it doesn't.

  • COD only in your country
  • No COD on large orders
  • No COD for first-time customers
  • A COD fee through a shipping rate

B2B and wholesale

Give business buyers the payment and delivery options you agreed with them.

  • Bank transfer only for B2B
  • Freight only for businesses
  • Require a company name
  • Minimum order values

International sellers

Different countries, different couriers, different ways to pay. One set of rules.

  • Payment methods by country
  • Valid postcodes by country
  • Block countries you don't serve
  • Region-specific COD

Stores with delivery limits

Heavy, fragile or special items? Make checkout match what your couriers can do.

  • No PO box addresses
  • Freight only above 20 kg
  • Hide express for some products
  • Require a phone for the courier

Shopify's limits, shown

Shopify allows 25 active payment and 25 active checkout rules per store. PayGate shows how many you use.

Never break checkout

Guardrails built in, so sales keep flowing

A checkout rule should never cost you a sale by mistake. PayGate is designed to fail safe.

Never hides everythingIf a rule would hide every payment or shipping method, it hides none.
Never blocks by accidentIf a checkout rule can't run, checkout isn't blocked.
Cheapest rate stays firstShipping order follows Shopify's rule: the cheapest option first and selected.
Safe copiesDuplicated rules start switched off, so nothing changes until you say so.

FAQ

Questions, answered

More in the documentation, or ask us directly.

Why isn't my rule changing checkout?

Open the rule and use Test this rule to see which conditions pass or fail.

Check that the rule is Active, and that names match exactly what Shopify uses. Payment methods use their name in Settings › Payments: card payments show as "Credit card" at checkout but are named after the provider, for example "Shopify Payments".

Make sure you didn't enter a shipping method where a payment method belongs. The editor warns you if it spots one.

How fast do changes apply?

Within a few seconds of saving, for new checkouts. Refresh an open checkout to see them.

Can I test a rule before customers see it?

Yes. Use Test this rule in the payment editor, or the Preview in the shipping editor. You can also save a rule as Inactive and turn it on later from the Rules page.

Could a rule stop customers from paying?

No. If a payment or shipping rule would hide every option, it hides none. If a checkout rule can't run (for example, during a Shopify outage), checkout isn't blocked.

Several rules together could still hide a lot, so the editors list other active rules that affect the same methods.

Why is the cheapest shipping option always first?

Shopify requires the cheapest shipping option to be listed first and selected by default. Your order applies to everything after it.

Can I charge a fee for Cash on Delivery?

Yes, through a shipping rate. Create a shipping rate that includes the fee (for example "Cash on Delivery (+Rs 300)"), then use the Configure cash on delivery fee template so Cash on Delivery only appears when that rate is selected. See the Guides for step-by-step instructions.

What are the limits?
  • Shopify allows 25 active payment rules and 25 active checkout rules per store. The Rules page shows how many you use.
  • Hiding only the express button of Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal needs Shopify Plus; otherwise the whole method is hidden.
  • Methods with logos (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal) can't be renamed, and express wallets can't be reordered.
  • Payment rules don't apply in Point of Sale or inside Shop Pay's own checkout.
Which plans are there?

The Free plan includes 1 active rule. Premium includes unlimited active rules ($3.99/month or $39.99/year) and starts with a 14-day free trial. On development stores every plan is free, so you can test Premium before you launch.
